It’s clearly time we put an end to this highly dangerous substance before things start getting out of hand. What do you think?
All sarcasm aside, smoking any substance is not particularly good for a person. If you are going to consume cannabis regularly, vaporizing it or eating edibles are the least harmful ways to ingest it.
Additionally, children and young adults who have not fully matured and developed yet are at a much higher risk for negative side effects of regular cannabis consumption.
One study that looked at a sample of 1,500 teenage boys at two different points in their lives, first at age 15 and then again at age 19, found that those who smoked pot and had genes that increased the risk of schizophrenia, had thinning in the cortex (the outer gray matter) of the brain, whereas those who did not smoke pot, but had the same genes, did not.
While research on the long-term effects of persistent marijuana usage is still limited and rather inconclusive, it should be well communicated and understood that the abuse of any substance is going to have negative consequences for an individual. This ranges from hardcore drugs like heroin to simple drugs we enjoy every day, like sugar.
Marijuana certainly isn’t the most dangerous substance you can consume, but don’t let it control your life either.

A Study Reveals: Your Body Knows When Death Is Near, And It All Begins In The Nose

It is not uncommon to hear family members talk about a loved one who has passed away. One interesting and surprising anecdote often heard is a person’s behavior prior to dying like; saying goodbye, getting closure on troubled relationships, and even giving away prized possessions. It seems they may know something before anyone else does.
Some may argue this is purely coincidence while others are confident people know when death is near. It is only natural to try to understand the death of someone we love or make sense of what happens in those final moments. Scientists know when someone dies, the body immediately begins to break down.
Putrescine, for example, is a foul and toxic scent; the result of decomposition. Researchers have come to realize humans subconsciously recognize this putrefying odor. Not only that, the scent, when released, causes an immediate response.

ANIMALS HAVE THE ABILITY TO SMELL THE SCENT OF OTHERS, PROMPTING THEM TO REACT ACCORDINGLY.

This is the equivalent to sensing danger whether from a predator or stronger and bigger animal from their pack.

The ability to detect chemical scents is part of survival across the species. The threat of death is revealed through smell to humans.

PUTRESCINE IS A CHEMICAL COMPOUND RELEASED WHEN A BODY DECAYS.

It also has a secondary function as a warning signal. People have both a conscious and subconscious reaction when they are exposed to this scent.

THERE WERE FOUR DIFFERENT EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED USING PUTRESCINE, AMMONIA, AND WATER TO STUDY PEOPLE’S REACTION.

One of the experiments included putrescine exposed at a site, people’s immediate response was to move away from the area.

When animals feel they are in danger there are only two responses; fight off the threat or run away from it. The study revealed people react similarly.

Separate studies have shown that sweat taken from people in fearful situations and exposed for others to smell generated an automatic and startled reflex.

“WE DO NOT KNOW WHY WE LIKE (OR DISLIKE) SOMEONE’S SMELL, AND WE’RE USUALLY NOT AWARE OF HOW SCENT INFLUENCES OUR EMOTIONS, PREFERENCES, AND ATTITUDES,” EXPLAIN WISMAN AND SHIRA.

“It is hard to think of a scent as frightening,” comment the two leading researchers. These scents make people more aware and vigilant of their surroundings.

HUMANS’ NATURAL REACTION TO DANGER IS NOT TO FACE IT AND FIGHT.

People tend to avoid any type of confrontation, whether its verbal or physical. For the most part, folks choose to distance themselves until fight is the only option left.

THE RESPONSES MAY BE DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER BUT PUTRESCINE AND SEX PHEROMONE ARE BASED ON SCENT.

Sex pheromones are chemicals released by the body to attract a mate while putrescine works as a warning signal. “Putrescine signals a different type of message than pheromones, but people’s responses to putrescine (avoidance and hostility) do seem indeed to be the opposite of responses to many sexual pheromones,” explain the research duo.

DURING THE STUDY, PEOPLE WERE NOT AWARE THEY HAD A NEGATIVE REACTION TO THE SCENT.

“People are not familiar with putrsescine and do not consciously associate it with death or fear,” admits Wisman and Shira.

6 Essential Buddhist Principles To Practice Daily That Will Instantly Change Your Life!

Here are six Buddhist principles that when practiced regularly will change your life!

1. CONSUME MINDFULLY.

Be aware of what you put into your body, be thankful for the nourishment good food provides.
Consider carefully before purchasing material objects. Ask yourself if it’s really something you need, or just a transient desire. Take a deep breath, and see if breathing is enough.
Pay attention to the effects of media you consume. Is it helping you grow or learn? Or is it a distraction or form of escapism? Does it destroy your mindfulness of the moment?

2. PAUSE. BREATHE. LISTEN.

Consider your words carefully. When you feel compelled to speak in a meeting or conversation, pause. Will your words bring harm or foster love?
Breathe before entering your home, place of work, or school. We must first choose to notice what is present before we can become comfortable with its existence.  Much counterproductive coping comes from “checking out” or trying to avoid places or situations that leave us feeling uncomfortable, or stressed.
Listen to the people you encounter. If we talk to others and listen when they talk, we create the possibility of mutual sympathy, understanding and tolerance.

3. PRACTICE GRATITUDE.

Notice what you have. Practicing mindfulness of gratitude consistently leads to a direct experience of being connected to life and the realization that there is a larger context in which your personal story is unfolding.
Be equally grateful for opportunities and challenges. The practice of gratitude is not in any way a denial of life’s difficulties. We live in troubling times, and no doubt you’ve experienced many challenges, uncertainties, and disappointments. The understanding you gain from practicing gratitude frees you from being lost or identified with either the negative or the positive aspects of life, letting you simply meet life in each moment as it rises.
Share joy, not negativity. Learn to rejoice in the good fortune of others and your own happiness multiplies – it’s the best cure for envy.

4. CULTIVATE COMPASSION AND LOVING KINDNESS.

Notice where help is needed and be quick to help. Selflessly act to alleviate suffering wherever it appears.
Consider others’ perspectives deeply. Observe your reactions with genuine interest and non-attachment. If we find it difficult to listen compassionately and patiently to the woes of others, we can almost be certain this is because we haven’t been able to sit still and listen to our own heart’s cries.
Work for peace at many levels. Whatever you experience internally is valid, it is there for a reason, whether you understand it or not.  It is not always necessary to understand the origins of an experience or a reaction in order to come to peace with it.

5. DISCOVER WISDOM.

Cultivate “don’t know” mind (= curiosity). With wisdom we become better at solving the problems in our own lives and are able to offer insightful guidance to others. Thus, the knowledge converted into wisdom brings happiness as a result.
Be open to what arises in every moment. The mind can focus in so many directions:  past, present, future, abstract notions or analytical problem solving, to name a few. All forms of thought have a useful role. Try to prioritize awareness of the present moment. Cultivate the ability to tune into sights, sounds, physical sensations, thoughts and emotions that are occurring in the present moment.

6. ACCEPT CONSTANT CHANGE.

Impermanence and change is the undeniable truth of our existence. What is real is the existing moment, the present that is a product of the past, or a result of the previous causes and actions. Because of ignorance, an ordinary mind conceives them all to be part of one continuous reality. But in truth they are not.

It has become a well-known fact that much of the food found in America is imported from China. Why would one need to buy food from China when we have so much farmland in America? It all has to do with the price, food from China is cheaper, but it comes at a cost.

1. Tilapia Fish

80% of tilapia in America comes from China. The fish are bottom feeders and will eat almost anything. With water pollution, the way it is in China, eating anything raised in that water would be unsafe to say the least. Plus, who knows what the fish are being fed. There is, also, one studythat states tilapia is less healthy than bacon.

2. Cod Fish

50% of American Cod comes from China. Yet again this is a water pollution and feeding issue. There are few restrictions in China for these types of exports.

3. Apple Juice

About 50% of all apple juice sold in the US comes from China. China has been known to use harmful pesticides on their food. Even pesticides that have been banned by their own government. Making apple juice at home from local organic apples is the best method.

4. Processed Mushrooms

34% of all processed mushrooms come from China. Just as we saw with apples, one does not know what the mushrooms are grown in and exactly how healthy they are. Just to be on the safe side, buy mushrooms local or from trusted American-based or Canadian-based farms.

5. Chinese Garlic

31% of garlic sold in America comes from China. Like with other grown foods, the pesticides involved in the process (mainly methyl bromide) are just not safe and should be avoided. You can find out how to spot Chinese garlic here.

6. Chicken

In 2013, the US Department of Agriculture approved the sale of chicken from China in the United States. As with fish (mentioned above) this is a pollution and feeding issue. China is commonly plagued with avian flu and other foodborne illnesses.

There are reports that China is now sending over rice that isn’t really rice. When cooked, it stays hard. The rice may actually be made of potato and resin. Essentially, plastic rice is on the market, and this may give the GMO grain companies a run for their money.

8. Black Pepper Mud

One vendor in China was caught selling mud as black pepper. Although this seems like a local issue, one must always verify quality.

9. Industrial Salt

Salt produced for industrial purposes is finding its way onto the tables of China. Therefore, any salt from China in America may also contain industrial salt. Consuming this salt may contribute to high blood pressure, hypertension, and the risk of heart attack and stroke.

10. Green Peas

Fake green peas have been found in China. These fake peas were created with snow peas, soy beans, along with green dye and sodium metabisulfite (a chemical that is used as the bleach and as a preservative). This dye is banned from using on produce because it may cause cancer, as well as inhibit the body’s natural ability to absorb calcium. These green peas also didn’t soften when boiled and the water turned an unnatural green color.

The message (again) appears to be: Eat local. Eat organic. Support healthy farming practices.

Everyone needs rest. At least forty million Americans have a sleep disorder of some kind, so you aren't alone. While it may be considered 'normal', every reasonable effort should be made to help you be the healthiest, energetic version of you.

Prepare your sleeping space

Your environment can make or break your sleeping schedule. Nothing can be more unnerving than getting ready for bed only for your bed to not be ready for you. A dirty, messed up bed is no fun. Keep the sheets clean and the bed made. 

Listen to some chill music

Hard rock and roll before bed might not be the best gameplan, but listen to some music that relaxes you and chills you out. Classical is my go to for situations like this.

Meditate

I can't tell you how many times I've gone to bed but couldn't sleep, then just meditated myself to sleep. Meditating and allowing yourself to fall asleep gives you some incredibly restful sleep and is an easy transition.

Take a warm bath

A warm bath, especially on a cold night, helps relax your muscles and set a busy mind at ease. Interestingly enough, having a colder room also helps you get to sleep. The bedroom should always be a little cooler than the rest of your house. If it's too hot, you'll end up waking up.

Give yourself a massage.

Or ask your partner to if you can! A massage with a little bit of grease free oil, like almond, lavender, or coconut oil can be as calming and soothing as any of the above trips.

3 Steps to Relieving Stress and Anxiety with Mindfulness and Buddhist Wisdom

 Bhante Henepola Gunaratana (the author of Mindfulness in Plain English) enlightens with this interesting information about the period of time the Buddha lived (in the area which is now the India/Nepal region):
“Rapid technological advances. Increased wealth. Stress. Stable lives and careers come under the pressure of accelerating change. The twentyfirst century? No, the sixth century b.c.—a time of destructive warfare, economic dislocation, and widespread disruption of established patterns of life, just like today.
In conditions similar to ours, the Buddha discovered a path to lasting happiness. His discovery—a step-by-step method of mental training to achieve contentment—is as relevant today as ever.”
 We aren’t as different as we think. The conditions which create stress are the same for all of us and have affected humans for thousands of years. And the cure has existed for just as long.
Buddhist wisdom tells us that just as there’s a central quality to all of our suffering, there’s a central cure for it as well. Stress and anxiety are no exception.
When looking at stress and anxiety, certain recurring themes rise to the surface. If you can work on these principles, in tandem with your daily mindfulness and sitting meditation practice, you can not only relieve stress and better manage your anxiety, you can even break the patterns of behavior that cause stress and anxiety in the first place and overcome them completely.
Samatha is a Sanskrit word which can be translated as “stopping”, and it’s the act of stopping, calming, resting, and healing to cultivate a tranquil mind.
Within this piece of Buddhist wisdom exists essentially all the components needed to not only relieve but altogether overcome stress and anxiety.
By letting the light of mindfulness guide you, you can use this ancient wisdom to transform your everyday state of mind and realize a great amount of relief from both stress and anxiety.

1. Bring the pebble (mind) to rest

The first step, and really the foundation of all meditative practice, is to calm the mind. So it goes without saying that establishing a strong mindfulness meditation practice is the key here.
By taking time to:
  1. Learn mindfulness meditation
  2. Establish sitting meditation as a daily habit, and sticking with it
  3. And then work on making mindfulness a way of life
…you can cultivate an extraordinary ever-present state of tranquility within you.
The basic state of a stressed or anxious mind is of chaos, disorder, or a lack of unity.
So by focusing on a central point, especially something which has a significant effect on our state of mind and stress and anxiety levels already (the breath), we experience great relief and generate a still calmness, like a pebble resting at the bottom of a lake.
And with that calmness comes clarity and the ability to identify the very patterns of behavior which are generating our stress and anxiety.

2. Identify harmful patterns

Once you’ve begun to calm the mind, you’ll start to be able to identify harmful stress and anxiety-creating patterns of behavior with your everyday mindfulness practice.
Before calming the mind, you’re traveling through life with dulled senses. Lots of things are happening “behind the scenes” (in the mind), but you can’t detect them because you’re not tuned correctly.
Just as you can’t see down to the bottom of a body of water with ripples running across the top of it, without calm you can’t have clarity, and this affects your ability to navigate life’s challenges skillfully.
By cultivating a tranquil mind, you not only calm the mind, but you remove obstructions which kept you from seeing with clarity. This is critical, without which this step wouldn’t be possible.
Examples of harmful stress and anxiety-inducing patterns of behavior are:
“I can’t stop, I have so much to do.”
“I can’t handle this, I’m not capable.”
“As soon as I get this done, I’ll take a break.” (hint: the break never happens)
“I’m fine, I’ll stop later.”
“What if this happens?”
‘What am I going to do”
“They’re supposed to listen to me.”
“Why didn’t this happen the way I wanted!!”
Another great example of this is in the West’s idea of a vacation. Many in the West make big plans for vacations with a set of events and a to-do list.
But what ends up happening is you get back from vacation more tired than when you began! And with that, the point of the vacation is lost.
We’ve forgotten how to truly rest our body and mind, and suffer greater stress as a result. By identifying these harmful patterns of behavior, we’re halfway to cutting off the source of the stress altogether and experiencing the greatest relief.
So what are you actually supposed to do?
Your only job here is to acknowledge these thoughts, feelings, and behaviors with your mindfulness as you notice them. Don’t read into them, don’t pry, just acknowledge what arises nonjudgmentally.
This sounds simple, but it’s often difficult and takes time.
Patience is very important from this point on, but you’ve gained considerable relief along with the other benefits of your meditation practice, so provided you continue practicing consistently you should have more than enough motivation to continue (most of the time at least).

3. Be present & give yourself time to heal

Once these patterns have begun to arise and become gradually clearer to you, you need to give yourself time to heal.
Continue to be present for these patterns- the thoughts, feelings, and actions- and have patience.
Patience can’t be overstated here. Developing mindfulness as a way of life takes a lot of work, but it’s so worth it. You need to have patience and allow things to develop and come as they will.
It’s also very important to be compassionate with yourself, because you tend to face somewhat uncomfortable things about yourself at this point.
Prioritizing your mindfulness practice truly is the most important effort here, not just for clarity and calm sake, but also to stay nonjudgmental. This will help you generate and maintain self-compassion.
Making the effort to simply be present, patient, and compassionate with yourself as these things arise will greatly help you reduce their hold over you with time.
Your mindful presence is a very healing energy. Truly nothing else is needed.
You can change your relationship with those stressors. By changing how you relate to them you can not only manage them better, but with time you can cut off the source of the stress and anxiety altogether.
Work to bring calm to the mind, identify harmful patterns of behavior, and be present, patient, and compassionate for the healing process.
Relief is possible, if you let the light of mindfulness and the wisdom of samatha guide you.
