Research by the University College London found that harsh parenting behavior had effects on the level of self-control for children and that these effects lasted and were also correlated with conduct problems later in life. The researchers say that ‘Harsh parenting predicted conduct problems for both boys and girls. Self-control at age 9 predicted conduct problems and emotional difficulties at age 12.’
Lower self-control levels were the result of strictly overseeing children’s behavior and being overly restrictive in the boundaries given to children. Allowing children, especially as they learn to manage their behavior within the reasonable boundaries that they have already mastered, to experience greater and greater freedom is essential to children being successful.

Listening To This Song Reduces Your Anxiety by 65%

Anxiety is very common and very serious problem in the United States. It affects around 40 million adults, or 18% of the population. Anxiety disorders can develop from a set of complex risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events. Those who suffer from anxiety know how debilitating it can be. Feelings of dread, fear, and loss of control can affect just about every aspect of a person’s life. Anxiety disorders drastically reduce quality of life for millions of people.


Some who suffer from anxiety turn to prescription medication. Others try yoga, meditation, massage, and other relaxation techniques. While different outlets work for different people, neuroscientists in the U.K. have discovered that a certain song results in a dramatic 65% reduction in overall anxiety. Any guesses?

Music Therapy And Anxiety

Researchers at Mindlab International in the United Kingdom set out to discover what type of music induces the greatest state of relaxation. In the study, participants tried to solve difficult puzzles. The difficulty of the task triggered a certain degree of stress. Participants were connected to sensors to gauge their stress levels. At the time time, they listened to a range of songs. Researchers measured their brain activity, heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate.
The study concluded that one song in particular resulted in a 65% reduction in the overall anxiety levels of participants. It also led to a 35% reduction in their usual physiological resting rates. The song’s title is “Weightless.” It was specifically designed by Marconi Union to induce a highly relaxed state. Musicians teamed up with sound therapists to arrange certain harmonies, rhythms, and bass lines. The goal was to create music that would slow down a listener’s heart rate and blood pressure, while lowering stress hormones.

Researchers found that the music is so effective, many of the female participants became drowsy during the study. Because of this response, Dr. David Lewis-Hodgson advises against listening to it while driving.

The Rise Of Anxiety Disorders

The rise of anxiety disorders may be related to technology. Social media allows tweens, teens and even adults to compare every aspect of their life with the lives of others. Relationships, beauty, body shape, weight and wealth; nothing seems to be off limits. Research has shown that time on social media can cause depression in those who compare themselves with others.
Students today report feeling significantly more isolated, emotionally fragile, and unstable than students in the past. Teens are also more likely to be self-absorbed, have low self-esteem, low self-control, and express feelings of dissatisfaction with life. Many researchers believe the rise in anxiety and other mental health issues is related to the way young people view the world, instead of the world as it actually is.

It’s not much of a surprise when we find out that known “healthy” habits and behaviors turn out to be unhealthy.  Many diet myths, health fads and “slim wear” have been debunked or rendered useless – or at best, limited – at one time or another. This brings us to our metabolism – the chemical process human beings use to obtain energy. The body’s ability to use fat as energy instead of storing it is what most people think of when we say “metabolism.” Yes, a well-functioning metabolism is important to our waistlines and hips, but it’s much more complex.
Metabolism involves all of the chemical reactions that take place within our cells in order to keep us alive. Without a healthy, functioning metabolism, our cellular bodies could not receive the necessary energy in order to sustain itself. In short – we’d die. Fortunately, our bodies do not stop metabolizing unless we effectively stop breathing. Our metabolisms can, however, become unhealthy and damaged.

1. CONFORMING TO A DIET

There are more weight loss products and weight loss systems on the market now than ever before. Want to know why? Well, then follow the money, of course – $6.3 billion. That’s the amount that weight loss companies reported making in 2015 alone. Americans climbing rate of obesity – combined with a serious market opportunity – means “Ca-Ching,” at least for these peddlers of the “latest, greatest” weight loss fad.
Despite of their proliferation, its best of abstain from a diet regimen altogether. The reason is that the majority of diets focus on entirely on restriction, not alteration. In other words, diets don’t teach us how to make subtle dietary changes (i.e. more protein, less carbs); they instead focus on eliminating – or severely reducing – food that provides fuel to our bodies. Low-carb diets are notorious for this practice. Instead, focus on making lifestyle changes for the long-term.

2. HYDRATING ON JUST WATER

Don’t get it twisted…hydration is incredibly important. However, the whole “drink eight full glasses of water each and every day” advice is misleading. Allow us to explain.
The body is a complex system that relies upon a steady stream of healthy vitamins, nutrients and other elements. Unfortunately, overhydrating has led to the misbelief that the gallons of water we’ve ingested have supplied what we need (thank the weight loss experts). The truth is, as healthy as water is, it is not always the best source of hydration for us.
Instead, seek to get a bit of variety. For example, mix some O.J. with water and add a dash of sea salt to get some much needed electrolytes. If it’s only water, mix in a lime or a lemon.

3. OVER-RESTRICTING SODIUM INTAKE

Yes, it is important to keep an eye on our sodium intake. The American Heart Association recommends 1,500 mg, which may still be a bit high. However, sodium plays a key role in maintaining our metabolic rate, lowering stress hormones, and aiding digestion.
A better approach is to limit salt intake via processed foods, which are unhealthy for various reasons. Most of us eat too much salt as a direct result of most foods being processed. Instead, make eating wholesome and non-processed foods a part of your lifestyle.

4. OVEREATING RAW VEGETABLES

As with the previous two unhealthy practices, this one needs to be read carefully. We’re talking only about raw veggies here. Simply lightly steaming vegetables most of the time will render this a non-factor.
Vegetables are an incredibly important source of vitamins and nutrients. They’re also very low in calories and sodium, and most contain no fat. But raw vegetables contain a high amount of cellulose – a fiber that is actually used in making paper and paperboard! Our digestive systems are not meant to handle large quantities of this compound, which can also lead to an assortment of digestive problems, creating a slow metabolism.

5. TOO MUCH CARDIO

Part of this is a societal trend. We seem to place more emphasis on sweating all over the elliptical machine or a treadmill as opposed to practicing a variety of different exercises.
The truth is there are some health benefits available in other types of exercise that isn’t available in cardio. Besides, High intensity interval training (HIIT) can give us most of the benefits of an hour-long run without all the added stress hormones.
Muscle-building is also great for achieving some upper and core body strength, boosting our moods, improving brain function, etc. The cool thing is that is that it can be a variety, too: weightlifting, bodyweight training, and yoga are all considered muscle-building exercises.
Also, consider mixing in a bike ride, nature walk or hike. This allows us to get in a cardio fix while also giving the body a bit of a break so we don’t slow down our metabolism.

 6. OVERLOADING ON FIBER

Fiber is an important nutrient for our bodies, especially in the digestive system. However, too much fiber contains elements that can prevent the absorption of important nutrients, thus slowing down your metabolism.
Also, eating too much fiber when having digestive problems can create even more complications. This occurs when there is too much gut flora – microorganisms (i.e. bacteria) that result in digestive problems such as gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea and even dangerous weight loss. When we ingest too much fiber, it feeds this gut flora and further complicates the issue, creating a slow metabolism.

7. EATING TOO MUCH “MUSCLE MEAT”

Muscle meat is the stuff that many weight trainers trying to add muscle eat a lot of – chicken breast, chicken wings, beef patties, etc. Side note: if these meats are farmed from quality sources, such as grass-fed cows and locally-bred chickens, that’s a much healthier option.

Most Brands of Tea Contain THESE Harmful Chemicals

Although tea is widely thought to be a healthier source of caffeine than coffee, pop or energy drinks, conventional tea brands have been shown to contain high levels of toxic substances such as fluoride and pesticides. The levels found in these products are so high that they are considered unsafe for consumption. As with most products, all tea is not created equal. Opting to save a few dollars on cheaper tea can cost you a lot more when it comes to your health.

Conventional Teas May Contain Fluoride and Pesticides

Most tea isn’t washed before it is distributed into bags. If the tea was sprayed with pesticides, those pesticides will wind up directly in your cup. Many non-organic tea brands have been found to contain pesticides that are known carcinogens. Popular tea brands often get away with listing “natural flavors” as an ingredient, causing many consumers to think they are buying better, cleaner ingredients. But there is a whole list of what “natural flavors” could mean.
A study published in Food Research International found that a significant percentage of the United Kingdom population greatly exceeded the recommended dietary intake for fluoride, which can lead to detrimental health effects. It was determined that the overexposure was occurring specifically from the consumption of tea. Overexposure to fluoride can cause problems with the bones and teeth, as well as kidney problems.

Where Does The Fluoride Come From?

Tea plants absorb fluoride from soil and accumulate it as they grow, so older leaves contain the most fluoride. Cheaper quality teas are often made from older tea leaves, which contain more fluoride. These teas also contain the least amount of anti-oxidants, lessening the health benefits associated with drinking tea.

Which Brands Contain The Most Toxins?

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation actually conducted an investigation on several popular international tea companies, including:
  1. Tetley
  2. Lipton
  3. Twinnings
  4. No Name
  5. Uncle Lee’s Legends of China
  6. King Cole
  7. Signal
Alarmingly, the CBC found that half of the tea brands contained a level of toxins that exceeded the legal limit. The worst offenders were:
  • King Cole, which contained the monocrotophos – a chemical that is currently in the process of being banned, as it causes irregular heartbeat and even coma.
  • Uncle Lee’s Legends of China, which contained more than 20 types of pesticides. One was endosulfan, which causes nervous system damage.
  • No Name, which contained more than 10 pesticide types.
That doesn’t mean the other tea brands were totally safe, however. In fact, only Red Rose tea was found to contain no pesticides at all.
Yikes!

How To Avoid Toxic Chemicals in Tea

You don’t need to stop drinking tea altogether to keep yourself safe from harmful toxins or pesticides that may be lurking in your cup. After all, tea is the source of some amazing health benefits. So what’s the solution?
  • Try switching to white tea. It has the least amount of fluoride because it’s made from young leaves.
  • Be sure to buy loose leaf tea or brew your own tea from scratch.
  • Buy organic! Choose a non-GMO certified brand of tea.
  • Check the ingredient list to make sure there are no added flavors or GMO ingredients added to the tea leaves.
  • Many restaurants use tea brands that are known to be full of pesticides, so be careful about ordering tea while out to eat.
  • Know the correct brewing times for certain types of tea. Black or Pu-reh teas should be steeped for 3-5 minutes; white or green teas should be steeped for 2-3 minutes; Oolong teas should be steeped for 4-7 minutes; and herbal teas should be left to steep for five minutes at minimum, longer for a stronger tea.
